Alexander the Great
“The Path to Power” and “Until the End of the World”

For the two-part documentary series “Alexander der Große –
“Auf dem Weg zur Macht” und “Bis ans Ende der Welt” |
Alexander the Great “The Path to Power” and “Until the End of the World” produced by Gruppe5 for ZDF, ORF, and ARTE, we developed intricate 3D animations to vividly depict the conquests and historical impact of Alexander the Great.

The documentary traces Alexander’s journey from Macedonia through Asia Minor, Egypt, Persia, and India. Key moments include his symbolic spear throw onto Asian soil, the cutting of the Gordian Knot, and the founding of numerous “Alexandria” cities. We reconstructed historical locations such as Babylon and Athens to provide an immersive backdrop for these events. Additionally, we visualized major battles at Granikos, Issos, and Gaugamela, highlighting his strategic brilliance and the charisma that inspired his troops.

The series also explores Alexander’s vision of a multicultural empire, exemplified by the mass marriage at Susa, and his unpredictable nature, seen in the burning of Persepolis and the enforcement of Persian customs among his soldiers.

Through expert interviews, historical reenactments, and advanced 3D animations, including large-scale battle scenes, this documentary brings Alexander’s extraordinary achievements and complex personality to life, offering a comprehensive view of his influence on world history.
