Welterbe des Mittelalters – 1300 Jahre Klosterinsel Reichenau
World Heritage of the Middle Ages – 1300 Years of Reichenau Monastery Island
In April 2024, the Badisches Landesmuseum in Konstanz opened the first major state exhibition of the year, “Welterbe des Mittelalters – 1300 Jahre Klosterinsel Reichenau | World Heritage of the Middle Ages – 1300 Years of Reichenau Monastery Island.” This exhibition highlights the rich cultural and historical legacy of Reichenau Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site for nearly 25 years.
For this exhibition, we provided detailed reconstructions of the construction phases of three key churches on Reichenau Island: the Church of St. George in Oberzell, the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Mark in Mittelzell, and the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Niederzell. These reconstructions, created in collaboration with historians and archaeologists, offer an immersive experience of the island’s medieval heritage.
The exhibition, which also features original locations, the newly arranged Cathedral Treasury, and the monastery gardens, underscores the historical importance and enduring legacy of Reichenau’s monastic community. This project has become a central highlight of Baden-Württemberg’s cultural scene this year, demonstrating the significant contributions of the Reichenau monks to European history.
