For the three-part documentary series “Die Welt der Ritter | Knights” produced by Gruppe5 for ZDF, Faber Courtial developed intricate 3D animations to illustrate the evolution and significance of knighthood.
Episode 1: Helden aus Eisen | Men in Iron
The first episode explores the early Middle Ages, highlighting the transformation of riders into knights. It features Heinrich Tangel from Otto I’s army and the Battle of Lechfeld in 955, depicting the beginnings of knighthood and the costs involved.

Episode 2: Für Ruhm und Ehre | For Fame and Honor
The second episode follows Heinrich von Neuffen on the Fifth Crusade, showcasing the challenges of medieval sea travel and the role of women managing castles. Our animations recreate naval warfare and the logistics of transporting knights and horses.

Episode 3: Die Letzten ihrer Art | The Last of Their Kind
The final episode focuses on Götz von Berlichingen and the decline of knighthood in the 16th century. It includes Emperor Maximilian’s transition to modern military strategies, grand tournaments, and the dangers of knightly combat, demonstrated through crash test experiments.
Combining historical reenactments, expert interviews, and advanced 3D animations, “Knights” provides an engaging look at the rise, culture, and decline of knighthood, bringing these historical periods to life for viewers.
