For the documentary “Gigant des Nordens – Hamburgs Aufstieg zum Welthafen | Giant of the North – the history of the Port of Hamburg” produced by Gruppe5 for NDR/Arte, we developed detailed 3D animations to vividly depict the evolution of Hamburg’s port over eight centuries. Our work helps bring to life the port’s transformation from a small landing on the Alster to one of Europe’s largest harbors.
The documentary showcases key historical events such as the rise and fall of the Hanseatic League, Hamburg’s growth into a global port post-America’s discovery, and the industrial revolution’s impact on cargo handling. It also highlights significant moments like the alleged privilege of Emperor Barbarossa, the “French period” during the Continental Blockade, and the decision to build an open tidal port.
Through photorealistic 3D animations, combined with documentary sequences, expert interviews, and archival footage, we provide an immersive look into the port’s rich history and ongoing challenges. This project underscores our commitment to using advanced technology to enhance historical storytelling, making the past accessible and engaging for viewers.
